Mercian 10 Exhibition

Our new Mercian 10 Display is now open. It celebrates 10 years of the Mercian

Regiment and has three Mercian Gallantry groups on display together.  The Mercian

Regiment was formed in 1st September 2007 through the amalgamation of

the Cheshire Regiment, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters and the

Staffordshire Regiment in the presence of their Colonel in Chief HRH The Prince of

Wales, and who also took the salute at Tamworth Castle.

At the time 2 Mercian, or 1WFR as it was before amalgamation, were serving on a

tour of Afghanistan.  Whilst serving in Afghanistan, the Battalion lost six soldiers;

Private Ben Ford, Private Damian Wright, Private Johan Botha, Sergeant Craig

Brelsford MC, Colour Sergeant Philip Newman and Private Brian Tunnicliffe.

1 Mercian were based in Alma Barracks at Caterick at the time of the amalgamation

and remained there  until they were deployed on Op Telic 11 (Iraq) in the November

of that year. Whilst 3 Mercian were based down at Tidworth at Mooltan Barracks

until their move to Fallingbostel, Germany, the same year. On amalgamation, a

reserve Battalion was formed, this was 4 Mercian which has its main HQ in

Wolverhampton but is based in various locations across the kingdom of Mercia.

 At some stage since  2007, all of the battalions were deployed to Afghanistan

where over 150 soldiers suffered life-changing injuries during the campaign in

Afghanistan. The exhibition is open now and closes on 31st March 2018.
